Dental restoration, or tooth filling, is a procedure used to rebuild and restore the strength and function of a tooth that has been damaged by cavities or external injury.
Fillings are typically made from either Composite or Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC).
Composite has a flexural strength similar to natural teeth and is available in various shades, allowing for a close match to your natural tooth color.
GIC is also tooth-colored and is often used for deeper fillings. It releases fluoride, which helps strengthen the tooth and makes it more resistant to future decay.
Tooth fillings replace the enamel layer that protects the tooth’s nerve endings. In some cases, the filling may be placed close to these nerves, causing mild discomfort or sensitivity. This pain usually fades as the nerve heals. However, if the pain continues, it's important to see your dentist, as the nerve may have been damaged before the filling was placed.
